Part 1 : Search Engine Ranking Factors

There’s a saying in the SEO community, “content is king”. That means that what’s most important to the search engines is what you have on your page. The substance of your page, the paragraphs that make up an article or the descriptions of products, is the content. As far as the engines are concerned, the more content text the better, because the more words on a page the better job they can do of figuring out what a page is about.

But that’s not the only reason content is king. When you have high-quality content your page is useful to the world. And as we know, the engines want to show high-quality pages. Further, when your page has useful content you’re much more likely to get inbound links from other sites. Let’s say you were putting together a list of websites to recommend to your visitors. Would you be more likely to list a page that was nothing but a bunch of ads, or would you be more likely to list a helpful article that demystified some topic (like this one) or showed readers how to do something interesting or useful?

It’s easy to focus on content when your site is an information site. But what if your site is commercial in nature and you’re trying to sell products? Maybe most of your “content” right now is pictures, which doesn’t help you very much with search rankings?

The Google Sand Box Effect

It has long been rumored that Google “sandboxes” new website targeting highly competitive phrases. The SEO community itself can’t come to agreement as to whether this is in fact the case, nor whether it applies to links (i.e. do links to your site gain weight the longer they are on a site).

An application to the US patent office today confirms what many believed to be the case, the sandbox effect, it appears, does exist.

The application was submitted in part by Google software engineer Matt Cutts. Basically the application is to patent a technology that will allow documents to be ranked in part by their age.

You must have heard all webmasters talking about a three letter word SEO. Why has this three letter word haunted webmasters and why do people want to learn so much about it? Here is some basic information for all of you who want to know what exactly is SEO.

SEO : An Introduction 

SEO ( Search Engine Optimisation) is the active practice of optimizing a web site by improving internal and external aspects in order to increase the traffic the site receives from search engine. In layman terms it is the art of optimising your website so that it could give you the best results in Search Engines. 

If your site cannot be found by search engines or your content cannot be put into their databases, you miss out on the incredible opportunities available to websites provided via search - people who want what you have visiting your site. Whether your site provides content, services, products, or information, search engines are a primary method of navigation for almost all Internet users.
